All of the major poker tournaments you'll have seen either online or on the television will have been a Muli Table tournament (MTT).
As the name suggests, MTT's start with a large number of players who are split among a number of different tables. As the tournament progresses and various players are eliminated, the number of tables needed to host all the players are reduced.
Eventually, the last ten players still playing will find themselves sat around "the final table" competing for the large cash prizes until only one player remains.
To a certain extent, an online poker site can live or die according to the MTT's that they offer their players. Below is a list of the poker sites which we believe offer the best MTT's out there.
It's important for a player to think about their own ability when it comes to choosing an MTT to play in. For example, Pokerstars do a fantastic job of promoting their Sunday Million MTT which pays out over $1.5m every Sunday ... which is why such a large number of professional and semi-professional players buy-in to it every week.
If you're at that level, then Pokerstars is definitely where you want to play which is why it is rated as the number one MTT site above. However, if your a noobie when it comes to poker, you may well find it much more profitable to play on a slightly smaller site such as Carbon Poker where you're not going to run into such strong opposition.
A succesful MTT player needs to embody a number of different character traits if (s)he's going to be regularly getting paid. Both stamina and the ability to think clearly are very important, due to the amount of time that players can find themselves sat around a table.
Equally, the ability to get a read on an opponent quickly can be a huge advantage as you're going to find yourself facing a lot of different players throughout the tournament, and getting an early read on an opponent can prove to be very profitable.
