French Investment Group Plays Dr. Frankenstein Full Tilt Poker, hit hard by the US government’s Black Friday attack on online poker sites, will soon be fully operational. In April of 2011, a US Attorney operating out of Manhattan cracked down on big online poker rooms operating within America’s borders. These were big names, like Absolute Poker, UB Poker, and Full Tilt Poker. The online poker rooms that didn’t cater to American players, rooms like those found at PKR and Pokerstars, actually gained a lot of customers from the UK who found themselves suddenly unable to play at Full Tilt, so not everyone in the world of online poker shed a tear over Black Friday. Full Tilt Poker has been in negotiations with a French investment group, Groupe Bernard Tapie also known as GBT, to get their business back on track offering online poker. Full Tilt’s main competitor, PokerStars, was not read More...

Well here we are – one week on from one of the darkest days that online poker has seen in a long time and the events of Black Friday are still making the headlines. In fact, they’ll probably continue to do so for several weeks/months to come. We thought it might be a good idea to look back over the last seven days and try to assess who the real winners and losers of Black Friday have been and predict where things might go from here. The Winners: With the four of the world’s largest poker rooms out of the way, it could be argued that every other poker site on the internet has been a winner over the last week. However, there are three companies above all that have greatly benefited from seeing the likes of Pokerstars shut down, and they are as follows: Sportsbook.com Sportsbook.com is currently considered by read More...

New events relating to the domain seizures on Black Friday continue to occur at a frantic pace. Four of the world’s largest poker rooms were forced to shut their doors to US players and 11 defendants (including the owners of each of the rooms) were arrested after a joint operation between the Department of Justice and the FBI. It left US poker players both dazed and angry as their accounts were instantly frozen meaning that any funds they were storing online were inaccessible. Well, today saw the first bit of good news to come out of this affair as Preet Bharara, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that the DOJ had reached an agreement with two of the websites in question to allow money to be refunded to the players in question. This agreement will allow Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker to briefly reinstate their read More...

When it comes to online gambling, one Congressman has always steadfastly refused to sit on the fence. Barney Frank has been a supporter of online gambling since the UIGEA bill was passed back in 2006, so it was only ever going to be a matter of time before he made his thoughts known regarding the poker domain seizure which occurred last Friday. In an interview with The Hill, Frank pointed the finger directly at the Obama administration saying that he was very disappointed in their decisions and the actions of the Department of Justice last Friday. He went further to say that the DOJ needed to think their priorities while accusing the government of ‘wasting it’s time and resources’ by going after online gambling sites. However, as we have pointed out on this blog before, the events of Black Friday (as it’s now being known) don’t appear to be an read More...

There are very few winners in the poker industry this morning after the much publicised domain seizures which took place at the end of last week in a combined operation by the Department of Justice and the FBI. US players are very much left out in the cold with a long line of questions. What has happened to any cash that they had in their poker account? And which poker rooms are still open to them? (we’ve tried to answer that last question for you here). European players at the rooms in question won’t be happy either given that they’re likely to see a large decrease in the amount of traffic and those who have been indicted on a number of different charges certainly aren’t in a good mood this morning. However, there are a few people that will be feeling quietly smug this morning, and no doubt a little read More...

Shortly after Pokerstars released an official press statement regarding the seizure of their primary domain, Full Tilt poker has done the same. However, while the statement from Pokerstars attempted to be fairly bright and breezy, the Full Tilt press release is much more formal and comes from the site owner Raymond Bitar – one of the men who has been indicted this weekend. The statement appears on the Full Tilt website and seeks to assure players that any funds held in online poker accounts are secure: “In light of recent events involving the freezing of certain accounts, Full Tilt Poker would like to assure all players that their funds remain safe and secure. Processing of both deposit and withdrawal requests is proceeding as normal and is still available to all of our players. All players who were affected by the current situation have had their funds returned to their accounts read More...

Pokerstars have been quick to respond to the startling news that the FBI and the Department of Justice have seized their primary domain in a crack down that has affected three of the world’s largest poker rooms. As if that weren’t enough, the owners of Absolute Poker/UB.com, Pokerstars and Full Tilt were all indicted for a number of federal crimes. These crimes were all related to the 1955 Illegal Gambling Business Act and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (or UIGEA) which was passed in 2006. As a result, the world’s largest poker room has released a statement which attempts to ease customer’s concerns regarding the security of any funds that are still held on the site, as well as informing players of a new domain that they are now using. “As you may have heard, we have had to suspend real money poker services to people based in the read More...

In what has arguably been the biggest crackdown on internet poker since the UIGEA bill was passed, the US Federal Government appears to have seized the domains belonging to the world’s largest poker rooms. Anyone visiting Pokerstars, Full Tilt, UB.com or Absolute Poker is now greeted with a simple HTML page which contains the official seals of both the Justice Department and the FBI. Five simple paragraphs are then printed informing the world that the domain is now the property of the FBI. This domain name has been seized by the F.B.I. pursuant to an Arrest Warrant in Rem obtained by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Conducting, financing, managing, supervising, directing, or owning all or part of an illegal gambling business is a federal crime.
We brought you news a little while ago of a split between Pokerstars and the former WSOP Main Event champion, Greg Raymer. Well the latest twist in this story is that Raymer has arrived at the upcoming NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship with a Full Tilt logo on his arm. Very few people in the industry expected Raymer to be without a sponsor for long, but it’s nevertheless a big surprise to see that Pokerstars’ long term rival has stepped up to the plate and offered him deal. Any agreement is rumoured to be short term, and may well have something to do with the fact that Raymer is likely to get an awful lot of air time over the course of the Heads Up Championship as he has been drawn against Mike Matusow – the man whose tongue never gave Raymer a moment’s peace during his historic 2004 WSOP read More...

The announcement identified PokerScout, PokerDB and Shark Scope as particular sites which Bodog would be targeting as they believe that the services they offer “mainly serve professional players.” Datamining is the process of gathering tournament results and hand histories through electronic means and then reselling them in various formats to a variety of players. It has always been a bit of a double edged sword for poker rooms. On one hand, they’re hugely popular with the big time players who generate the majority of a site’s revenue. However, the information that this data provides produces such a gulf in class that recreational players find their bankrolls disappearing in a flash … and as a result, they’re less likely to return to make future read More...
