When Phil Hellmuth suffers a bad beat, you'd better believe that the rest of the casino is going to hear about it. Labelled "The Poker Brat" due to his childlike tantrums, Hellmuth is not a good loser. In fact, if he feels his opponent has been lucky in beating him, he will most certainly not bite his tougue.
However, while the vast majority of players on the circuit may not agree with his actions, they can not argue with his results. At only 45, Hellmuth is arguably the most succesful player in No Limit Hold'em history with a total of 11 WSOP bracelets and live tournament winnings exceeding $12m at the time of writing.
Success isn't the only thing that has characterised Hellmuth's career though - controversy has never been far away. Having got into a fight with fellow professional Sam Grizzle (an altercation which he later called a 'draw'), Hellmuth then stormed off the set of the well known TV show Poker After Dark, when his opponents refused to stop talking in order to all him to think about playing a particular hand.
At the 2007 WSOP, Hellmuth appeared in an Ultimate Bet Race car closely followed by 11 Ultimate Bet models (one for each WSOP bracelet the Brat had previously won). Unfortunately for him though, he lost control of the vehicle in the parking lot and proceeded to crash it into a concrete lamp post, causing several thousand pounds worth of damage. Luckly nobody was hurt.
Today Hellmuth is the main ambassador of the online poker site Ultimate Bet where he regularly plays along side fellow professional Annie Duke. He is also the author of a number of popular books such as "Bad Beats and Lucky Draws" and "Play like the Pros."
He still plays in the biggest tournaments going and makes sure that his entrances aren't missed. In the past he has arrived at the WSOP dresed as Julius Caesar and an Army Marine - both times with a host of models who insist on walking him to his table.
