Gus Hansen is a highly successful pro from Denmark who has made a huge impact on the game with his super-aggressive style and unpredictable willingness to play any starting hand that he may be dealt. One of the last poker players you want to find sitting opposite you at the poker table, “The Great Dane” is also one of the most entertaining players to watch in any given game.
In his youth, he was highly interested in sports and was a youth tennis champion in his home town of Copenhagen. This interest soon introduced Hansen to the world of sports betting, which he became instantly enamoured with, although it’s something that he admits he is still not particularly successful in.
From sports, Mr Hansen moved on to Backgammon where he enjoyed a fair amount of success before coming bored with the lack of action in the game and it was only while he was an exchange student at UC Santa Cruz that Hansen was introduced to the game of poker. He soon became a regular at the Ocean View Card Room in California where he rapidly became a feared opponent.
Today, has Hansen has found most success on the World Poker Tour. He recorded his first win in 2002 when he walked away with just over half a million dollars and has gone to be the record holder for the most final table appearances and wins on the WPT tour. He then went on to record first place in an international tournament named “The Bad Boys of Poker” where he beat the likes of Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari.
Ironically his biggest success but also one of his biggest disappointments occurred in 2006 when Hansen finished second to David Chiu in the $25k World Championship World Poker tour event. Despite earning $1.7m for his work, Hansen was extremely annoyed that he hadn’t won the event given the fact that he had entered heads up play with a 10:1 chip lead.
Outside of the WPT, there have been other victories most notably in the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament ($1,000,000), and the Aussie Millions Main Event ($1,500,000). In total, it’s believed that The Great Dane has won an impressive $7.2m from tournaments alone.
There have also been notable wins in various high stake cash games. Hansen has made successful appearances on multiple editions of “High Stakes Poker” where he most famously picked up a pot worth $600k when his quad fives crushed Daniel Negreanu’s full house in the biggest poker hand ever televised on television. He is also well known for playing High Stakes games at The Bellagio on Las Vegas and the $2k/$k Pot Limit Omaha and No Limit Hold Em games on Full Tilt poker – his primary sponsor.
